| Road wheel Q; 28 spoke radial lace in front ok for clyde? | dontgothere Jan 8, 2004 9:19 AM | | Hello: I'm looking at new road wheels to replace my noisy old wheels (ultegra/open pro cd/32 3x front and back). I'm thinking of going 28 radial front, 32 rear with 2x rear non-drive, and 3x rear drive side, with 15/16 dt spokes. I weigh 225, and put about 2500 miles on the road wheels in 2003. Is this too light a build? Thanks - Kelly |
| Well................ | Mike T. Jan 8, 2004 9:32 AM | | .....I recently got a new roadbike with Mavic Cosmos wheels which are 24/28h with the front being radial.
I'm 185lbs and usually build my own wheels and would never have dreamed about building myself even a pair of 28 holers. 24 hole? No way!
But these Mavics seem very stiff and the Product Reviews at roadiebikereview are very favorable even from large people. No-one reports their wheels falling apart.
But you mention 15/16g spokes! That's pretty light Kelly. How about 2.0/1.8 (14/15g) spokes? That would give more peace of mind. If you want light AND strong go with Sapim CX-Ray but you can't have "cheap" as well.
If you build them right with lots of tension, relief and equality I think they will be ok. |
| Where can I get these parts? | dontgothere Jan 9, 2004 10:24 AM | | Dear Mike: thanks for your reply. It kind of confirmed what I thought. I really don't want to be thinking about how many or what gauge spokes I have when I'm going 50mph.
I've never built a wheel, but I'm considering trying it with an old pair of Shimano Parallax(sp?) hubs and Rhyno Lite rims. Until I get a chance to try that, though, I have to buy from others. Do you have a build/spec/price in mind? If so, and you want to let me know, please email me. Thanks again for the input - Kelly |
