| Leftover part after maintenance on WTB and LX hubs | hobart Jan 9, 2004 9:40 AM | | I disassembled my front WTB Greasegard hub and rear LX hub some days ago. After cleaning, lubing, and reassembly, I noticed one part left over. It was a rubber gasket with the i.d. ( max. about 3/4" dia. )cone-shaped and the o.d. ( about 1" dia. ). There is a groove or dado on one side which was filled with tan-colored grease. That color of grease looks like WTB factory stuff. I contacted WTB, but I didn't get a reply. I also looked for some exploded view diagrams for the hubs online, but I can't find any.
Any ideas? |
| Well, if it's off the front there should be two of them...? | Bianchi4Me Jan 9, 2004 11:52 AM | | Front hubs usually have symmetrical seal designs. So if it came off the front hub, there should be another one in there. I'd say open it up and look for a mate to your leftover part. That should hopefully enable you to reinstall it in the same postion and facing the right way. |
| Hmm... good point. Thanks | Hobart Jan 9, 2004 1:15 PM | | |
| Just spoke with a WTB guy, told me the same.... | Hobart Jan 9, 2004 1:23 PM | | As suggested above, he said to just take the front hub apart and see if the seal was on both sides. Otherwise, the grease will fill the entire hub - not a good thing; wasteful!
Also the hub ( most likely a New Paradigm hub ) uses angular contact bearings, so no lock nut for preload is necessary. Just fingertight the outer caps, mount to the fork, & go. |
