Leftover part after maintenance on WTB and LX hubshobart
Jan 9, 2004 9:40 AM
I disassembled my front WTB Greasegard hub and rear LX hub some days ago. After cleaning, lubing, and reassembly, I noticed one part left over. It was a rubber gasket with the i.d. ( max. about 3/4" dia. )cone-shaped and the o.d. ( about 1" dia. ). There is a groove or dado on one side which was filled with tan-colored grease. That color of grease looks like WTB factory stuff. I contacted WTB, but I didn't get a reply. I also looked for some exploded view diagrams for the hubs online, but I can't find any.

Any ideas?
Well, if it's off the front there should be two of them...?Bianchi4Me

Front hubs usually have symmetrical seal designs. So if it came off the front hub, there should be another one in there. I'd say open it up and look for a mate to your leftover part. That should hopefully enable you to reinstall it in the same postion and facing the right way.
Hmm... good point. ThanksHobart

Just spoke with a WTB guy, told me the same....Hobart

As suggested above, he said to just take the front hub apart and see if the seal was on both sides. Otherwise, the grease will fill the entire hub - not a good thing; wasteful!

Also the hub ( most likely a New Paradigm hub ) uses angular contact bearings, so no lock nut for preload is necessary. Just fingertight the outer caps, mount to the fork, & go.
