I'm sure this has been asked a billion times, but here goes...

I'm looking at getting some new wheels and am stuck between getting 517 or 618 rims...Either way the rims will be 32 spoke 3x laced to XT hubs...The wheels will be rim braked and used for XC riding...I only race 2 or 3 times a year and do some rough technical riding, but mainly it's your basic run of the mill XC riding....I weight 140lbs and I think the 618's might be a bit of an overkill for me, but some of the reviews on this site of the 517's have me a bit spooked...I want to make sure what I get can handle most anything I dish out...

Currently I'm running Sun Od Lites laced to XT hubs and haven't had any problems over 3 seasons of riding....I want to make sure that continues with the new wheels...

Thanks,
Rich

and I weigh 200, probably 220 with gear. The wheels are XT hubs with DB spokes and alloy nips with the 517's and were handbuilt by Universal Cycles. I ride them pretty hard on the trails and some urban including 3-4 foot drops and stairs. They seem a little bit weak laterally, but my weight has a lot to do with it. I have had to true and dish them occasionally, but not that much. I've never had a problem with them rubbing the pads. I'm suprised they've held up considering some of the reviews. If you want something a little stronger, you may want to try the Mavic 519 or 719 (they're the same rim only different model year).

As many have said, the build is just as important if not more than the parts.
