3.1 UST rim, regular tire, & some goop: OK??? (4 posts)
| 3.1 UST rim, regular tire, & some goop: OK??? | oldfart Jan 10, 2004 10:55 AM | | How well will this work?
UST rims (Mavic 3.1)
regular tire (Schwalbe Big Jim 2.25)
stan's goop, no tube
no extra rim strip (no Stan's strip), just whatever is normal on the 3.1,
What is normal on the 3.1? I am buying sight unseen.
Any size issues (big tire, small rim) or tube-type tire on UST rim? |
| Will work fine..No issues...Many do it without worries..One item | Trevor! Jan 11, 2004 3:22 AM | | Schwalbes can be a pain in the ass to get to work tubeless!!!!!! Otherwise you will have no issues!!!!! |
| Agree with Trevor.... | The Squeaky Wheel Jan 11, 2004 6:12 AM | | That setup will work, but I still recommend using UST tires for everyday use. They're just more durable and fool-proof.

| may have to re-think | oldfart Jan 11, 2004 9:47 AM | | Well, I didn't get the 3.1-rimmed wheels off ebay like I had hoped, but thank you for your comments. Maybe another 3.1 wheelset will surface in my price range. Alternatively I keep thinking about the Ritchey Pro OCR's at Online Bikesource.
Could you elaborate on how Schwalbes are a "pain in the ass" tubeless? Those ARE on their way.
I'm trying to get a back-up wheelset. Hopefully (relatively) light & cheap, for use on the nastier, rockier trails I sometimes frequent (hence the meatier 2.25 Big Jim's). My current XC set-up is Explorers on 317 / Hugi wheels. Without going overboard on weight or cost I was trying to get something a bit more rugged. I was trying to compensate by going with Stan's goop instead of a tube, and I had heard that 3.1's were stronger than 317's. Not that I have had any problems, but I hope a larger tire will help over the nasty sharp-edged rocks (such as Loop D, Ray Roberts Isle duBois trail, or Cleburne SP, in N.TX). |
