| 8 or 9 speed cranks will work fine... | CraigH Jan 21, 2002 5:40 PM | | The only difference is that the rings are a little thiner, and spacing & thickness of the cassette cogs.
(Still have 2 bikes set up with 7 speed.) |
| 8 or 9 speed cranks will work fine... | J Jan 21, 2002 8:48 PM | | Hey.. Thanks.. One other thing.. How will I have to compensate for the spacing & thickness of the cassette cogs? What other restrictions/changes will that place on me?
Thanks again!

| 7 & 8 speed chain is the same... | CraigH Jan 21, 2002 9:20 PM | | 9 speed needs a narrower chain.
To go from 7 speed to 8 speed, Shimano added the thickness of one gog to the cassette.
To go from 8 to 9, they took the 8 speed distance and divided it by 9. So the cog thickness & spacing is narrower on 9 speed than 8.
If you are just changing the cranks & rings, the only other thing you should do is put a new chain on it. You don't want to kill a new set of rings due to a worn chain.
You might want to also ask over on the drivetrain page just to confirm. I'm pretty sure I'm correct though.
Also check out Sheldon Brown's site, he has all the bike drivetrain trivia you could want!
