Jan 7, 2004 9:05 PM | | I'm looking for a cheap, superlight 26" MTB wheelset... I got one a few years ago with Sub-IV rims, DB 15/16 spokes, etc. for $100 (forgot where), and it's been great. Looking for something similar. Thanks!! |

For cheap I'd look at the usual suspects.
E-Bay, Pricepoint, Supergo, JensonUsa, even Performance and Nashbar.
For lightweight I'd look at another list of usual Suspects.
E-Bay, Oddsandendos, Mountain High Cyclery, then Jensonusa.
If you feel the need to roll your own...
Watch E-Bay for decent hubs, and possibly even rims.
Front Hubs: I've seen some Sun SOB's, Hershey Mini hubs, Nuke Proof, Hügi 240's, King, and a few others on there.
Rear Hubs: I'd go with something a bit more durable. Shimano XTR, King, Hügi 240's, Hope.
Rims: Bontrager Valiant (if you can weigh it first!), otherwise Mavic 517's, after that would be Bonti Mustangs or some Ritchey/Sun/other brand. I've seen some lighter weight rims on E-Bay recently some Ritchey 395's, Ayara 395's, and Valiants too.
Spokes: www.oddsandendos.com Mike's got great service and good prices. Even helped me out when I had a wrong measurement. Glad I got it fixed BEFORE completing the order. Much better experience than Cambria when I ordered spokes. Spokes didn't arrive with a placed order, called, nothing in computer, so ordered spokes somewhere else. A month later - get a surprise package from Cambria with my spokes. So used those to build up a similar wheel, still a PITA though. :)
For a good combo of weight and cost... Look at Shimano LX on Mavic 517 with DB spokes. Decent weight and should be very reasonable. Might be able to find 'em (or something close to it at Supergo).

Not bad for the price. LX Hubs, Straight 14g spokes, Sub IV Rims. $90.
